Toady in broadcast tech, I finished creating my six word story, which was Every Hand Has a Different Tale. I chose this story because I think that its interesting that hands can do so many different things, and that you can tell a lot about a person based on what their hands do. My actual video is slightly different than my storyboard. One thing I changed was the order of the shots because I thought it looked better. The other thing I changed were some of the shots. I changed the angles on some because I thought it over and decided that some shots looked better when shot from a different angle. On two others, I changed the subject of the shot. Instead of doing shots of me doing math like I originally planned, I decided to do shots involving a cat because I felt that it would work with the story better. Shot one was a birds eye view, and I used it because it was a different shot that gave an interesting view on what was going on. Shot two was a POV shot that I used because it allowed the viewer to see things from my perspective. Shot three was a medium close up that I used because it allowed focus on my hands but also left room for the viewer to be able to see the piano I was playing. Shot four was a medium shot that was used because it focused on the important things, like the piano and the piano player, and allowed for people to be focused on that instead of the surroundings. Shot five was a wide shot that allowed to viewer to take a look at the surroundings and get a idea of where I might have been. Shot six was a close up shot that was used because it more clearly showed the action that was happening in the previous shot. This was a very fun project to create, and I enjoyed making it.
This week in Broadcast Tech, we focused on shooting and editing in Final Cut Pro X. It wasn't super hard to use the digital HD cameras when shooting. The most difficult part of using this camera was probably putting it together. You have to make sure that you get a fully charged battery, a tripod, a tripod plate, and an SD card. One important thing I learned to do when shooting with the camera is to make sure I have good white balance. White balance makes colors look natural, and it is very important to check that it is on before shooting. It is also important to check the focus of the camera, so that everything looks nice and sharp. After learning about the camera, we practiced shooting. It was more difficult than I anticipated it being. A wide shot was closer than I thought it would be, but it was still wide. I had to make sure there wasn't too much headspace and that the camera stayed on the right side of the 180 degree axis. Headspace is the space above a person when filming, and the 180 degree axis is an imaginary line that makes it so that the camera doesn't make subjects flip sides when filming. Medium and tight shots were slightly easier to film for some reason, and filming was finished quickly. After all the shots were taken, our class learned how to use Final Cut Pro X. I'd never used it before, so I learned a lot in a short amount of time. Creating Circus Wagon, a test project, was interesting, and taught me many things, such as shortcuts and transitions. Editing the 6-shot video was easier than Circus Wagon, and taught me how to make sound transitions and manually change the colors of the video. One challenge that I faced was how the sound changed over the course of different shots. This issue was fixed with sound transitions that made the sound melt together. I liked the freedom that came with shooting and editing, and I'm excited to learn more.
